Nestlé Purina Voluntarily Recalls Single Lot of Therapeutic Canned Cat Food Due to A Low Level of Thiamine (Vitamin B1)

Cat food may contain low level of thiamine, according to Food and Drug Administration tests
Nestle Purina PetCare is voluntarily recalling one lot of Purina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management wet cat food, available through veterinarians in the US and Canada, in response to a consumer complaint received by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Analytical testing of the product sample by the administration indicated a low level of thiamine (Vitamin B1).

The recall is for 5.5-ounce cans of Purina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management Feline Formula marked with a "best-by" date of June 2013, production code 11721159 and can UPC code 38100-13810. This product was distributed to veterinary clinics between June, 2011 and May, 2012 throughout the U.S. and Canada. The product is not sold in retail stores.

Cats fed this affected lot exclusively for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, falling, circling and seizures. Contact a veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs.

RECALL UPDATE: PET FOOD SICKENS OWNERS

An outbreak of a rare strain of salmonella poisoning linked to recalled dog food has infected at least 14 people in nine states, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention said.

Diamond Pet Foods produced the dry dog food at a South Carolina plant. The company voluntarily recalled three dry dog food products last month, the CDC said in a statement on Thursday.

Infections were reported from October 8, 2011, to April 22, and five people were hospitalized. Cases were reported in Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Seven of 10 ill people said they had had contact with a dog in the week before becoming sick. Five sick people recalled the type of dog food with which they had contact, the statement said.

The bacteria is salmonella infantis, a rare strain, the CDC said.

Salmonella infections often cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps and usually last four to seven days. Most people recover without treatment, but in rare cases it can be fatal.

RECALL EXPANDING: Diamond Pet Food

May 4, 2012 – Diamond Pet Foods has today announced that it is expanding its voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulations due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

The affected products were manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012.

This current event is in addition to three other recalls announced by Diamond last month.

According to the company, none of the additional products being recalled today have tested positive for Salmonella. However, the manufacturer claims it is pulling these products from store shelves “as a precaution”.

The company is working directly with distributors and retailers who carry these products to remove them from the supply chain.

LA Star Seafood Co. Inc., Los Angeles, CA is recalling Vobla Dry and Vobla Smoked Fish because they have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

The sale of improperly eviscerated fish, 5 inches in length or greater, is prohibited because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning which may pose a potentially life-threatening health hazard. Symptoms of botulism include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing and respiratory paralysis which may lead to death. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
